Grand Valley State University Kelly Family Sports Center
Responding to an increased demand for recreational space, Grand Valley State University Kelly (GVSU) added the Kelly Family Sports Center to its Athletic and Recreation facilities. The Kelly Family Sports Center provides indoor sports, fitness, and education opportunities to the GVSU campus and community. The program was functional, sustainable, cost-effective, and student-focused. It shaped the 138,000 square foot building, specifically the 100-yard field, six-lane 300-meter indoor track with nine sprint lanes. The track includes long jump and triple jump lanes and pits, an indoor pole vault, shot put, a high jump area, and a 100-yard indoor synthetic turf field. The building has multi-purpose rooms for various student activities, day-use student locker/shower rooms, public restrooms, an athletic training room, concession area, bleacher seating for up to 800 spectators, and field-level bleacher seating for 260 student-athletes. The structurally complex long-span building is intentionally positioned to maximize sunlight, solar heating, and natural ventilation. Sustainable highlights include photo-voltaic roof panels, solar wall technology, a turf roof, and rain gardens. It boasts a 25% improvement over baseline energy consumption.
