Elevating the Private Air Travel Experience
Otter Air Services’ new world-class headquarters is a dynamic passenger and flight support facility at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Otter’s 40,000-square-foot facility includes a 17,000-square-foot Group II hangar, passenger lounges, hospitality enclaves, and flight operations support spaces. The facility houses a fleet of Pilatus aircraft and over 20 full-time staff.
As a new venture, Otter envisioned elevated experiences for passengers and operations staff — a facility attractive to discerning clients and the highest-caliber personnel, pilots, and technicians.
ICONIC - A single word shared by the client became the guiding design principle for the project team. The Otter travel experience will transcend industry norms with exceptional service and inspiring environments.
Otter’s client-centered experience focuses on creating clear internal and external connections. Passengers arrive beneath a tapered canopy reaching out from the transparent reception lounge facade. Offering protection from inclement weather at grade, the canopy becomes a 75’ outdoor terrace extension of the upper-level bar and lounge. With a subtle shift in plan, the two-story lounge offers a sweeping panorama of awaiting aircraft on the Otter ramp and the active runways beyond. A 10-degree tilt of the west glass wall provides reflection-free views typical of air traffic control towers. The 2.5-inch-thick insulated laminated glazing provides superior thermal, structural, and acoustic performance. The uninterrupted sights and tempered sounds offer a refined experience of aircraft takeoffs and landings.
Otter’s clients enjoy well-appointed spaces to relax or conduct business, and operations staff enjoy a variety of work and collaboration environments that support a dynamic, service-oriented business. The interior experience offers a warm and calming range of textures and colors, with subtle instances of biophilia — a live planted wall, and whimsical, travel-inspired moments, including an analog split-flap message board. Visual connectivity is celebrated, from client lounges to aircraft crews and distinctive aircraft within the hangar and on the ramp. A transparency that challenges the traditional sensory barriers between people and planes offers a singular travel experience that is Otter.
