Broadway Lofts Honored with the Prestigious Jack Kemp Award
The Urban Land Institute announced Broadway Lofts as a winner of the 2023 Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award. Created in 2008 in memory of Jack Kemp, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the award aims to honor developments that demonstrate creativity in expanding affordable and workforce housing opportunities.
Broadway Lofts is a redevelopment of a vacant parcel by the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) of the City of Mt. Pleasant and the Michigan Community Capital (MCC). Situated on 1.4-acres in historic downtown Mt. Pleasant, this four-story mixed-use building contains 10,350 square feet of commercial space and 48 energy-efficient, multiple-family dwelling units. With frontage on the Chippewa River and Broadway Street, Broadway Lofts offers residents a 1,100-square-foot community room, bicycle parking, mail room, and outdoor dining area at the southeast corner of the building. This seating is near the GreenTree Co-Op Market, a local grocery cooperative that utilized the commercial space to expand its 50-year-old business.

“Each year, I am impressed by the creativity and innovation behind these projects and the impact they have on their communities.
The developments we honor offer replicable models that we hope will inspire the building of more attainable housing,
and we congratulate each development team for their exemplary work.”
