The Sustainability Design Award goes to… Belknap Place Apartments!
The IA team celebrated this two-time award-winning project at this year’s AIA GR Honor Award Event.
Belknap Place Apartments, the 2023 Affordable Housing and 2024 Sustainable Honor Award winner, is a 3-story, 50-unit apartment building nestled in the historic Belknap Lookout neighborhood of Grand Rapids that provides an equitable mix of affordable and market-rate residential units. The sustainable design and USGBC LEED Gold certification demonstrate the project’s success in promoting environmental stewardship, resource efficiency, and enhanced quality of life for its residents.
Belknap Place achieved its initial goal of LEED Silver certification and surpassed expectations by earning a LEED Gold certification. This accomplishment reflects the project’s commitment to exceptional sustainability standards. Belknap Place significantly minimized its environmental footprint by integrating advanced energy-efficient systems, utilizing sustainable materials, and incorporating innovative green building practices.
This project proves that the work Integrated Architecture and many others have put into championing sustainable design principles over the years is paying off. Designing equitably, economically, and with well-being and natural resources in mind has resounding benefits for our clients and communities.
