Academy Manor

Academy Manor, formerly the Marywood Campus Motherhouse, has been a cornerstone of the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids community for over a century, serving as both their headquarters and an educational institution. Built in 1922, the five-story U-shaped structure exemplifies Neoclassical architecture with Italian Renaissance influences, featuring limestone cornices, decorative arches, and a stately porte-cochere. In response to evolving needs, the Sisters sold the property to developers in 2020 to transform the Motherhouse into a 109-unit senior living complex, balancing historic preservation with modern functionality. The renovation converted dormitory-style rooms, classrooms, and offices into contemporary apartments while addressing structural challenges, accessibility, and updated mechanical systems.

This project thoughtfully balanced preservation and modernization, maintaining the building’s historic character while enhancing its functionality. The well-preserved exterior remained largely untouched, while outdated windows were replaced to improve energy efficiency and natural light. Overgrown trees were removed to reveal the façade, though historically significant Camperdown Elms were carefully protected. Inside, original terrazzo flooring was uncovered and restored where possible, with new finishes installed as needed.

Now, proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Academy Manor offers residents a unique living experience that honors its rich history while providing modern comforts.
